From Jefferson L. Dugger to Abraham Lincoln, May 4, 1859

    Leavenworth City K. T.

    May 4th 1859

    Hon A Lincoln

    Springfield Ill

    Dear Sir

I see by the N. Y. Tribune that Greely is to be here about the 20th or 25th of this month, and I

am told by Delahay that you contemplate a visit here soon.  Is it possible that you can be here

when Greely Comes, It is the purpose of our folks here to have the grandest demonstration that

has ever been held in the Territory.  If you will come with Greely a committee will be appointed

to invite you.  The Republicans I find are wide awake here and will make a bold fight.  The

Democracy have become divided.  The Douglas wing are trying to ring in by passing Free State

Resolutions in their meetings and all that sort of thing.  The Administration party here are,

about inpropostion, as they are in Illinois, taking the hopeless ground of making Kansas a Slave

State.  Every one I have heard speak of the matter are anxious to have you come out and make

a Speech, and if you can, or will go out to Ossawatomie to the Convention I will engage to take

you out in a Carriage.  I am about commencing the Law  I have formed a partnership with

Delahay.  Write me by ret. Mail

    Yours as Ever

    Jeff L. Dugger
